This would work great for a normal short-cut, but as as mentioned in my OP, Apps that are installed from the Windows Store or side-loaded, seem to have a special unique id, per app, associated with them. Since anything performed in that folder affects all users on the system, it is heavily restricted. You have already found the best way to add shortcuts there, by creating them in another folder and moving them to the public desktop folder using an Administrator account.

The only other way to do this is to take ownership of that folder and change the permissions. This is definitely not recommended since it reveals and opens a well known path for malicious infections.

Hope this helps. Hi Ronnie, Thanks for the reply, but I think you're misunderstanding You could pick the old 'show desktop' icon. The blue one highlighted below looks appropriate. With the proper icon set, you can now right-click the Show Desktop shortcut and choose Pin to taskbar. You can drag the icon around to left or right in the taskbar. You can now delete the shortcut on your desktop if you wish. The Show Desktop icon pinned to taskbar will continue to work properly.
