Improve aluminum windows

I am guessing that they are over 40 years old. They are not too pretty but still effective as storm windows. The real problem with aluminum widows is that they were made out of aluminum. And aluminium is known to be a great conductor of heat and cold. So if you have the old simple single pane aluminium windows or worse yet, sliding glass doors, you are losing a lot of energy. In addition, you have to admit that those windows are pretty darn ugly.

So if you got em then by all means think of replacing them. The real issue is what to replace them with. There are a lot of good replacement windows out there including some new efficient aluminum windows. Just remember, that with windows it is true that you are going to get what you pay for. Fortunately, it's simple enough to build efficiency into the window with accessories like double weatherstripping and interlocking meeting rails.

If you happen to live in a temperate climate that doesn't change much with the seasons, aluminum's conductivity won't matter as much. A closed single-pane aluminum frame window measuring 30"x30" has the power to transfer same amount of energy as an uncovered six-inch square hole in the wall. Because of their low efficiency, aluminum and aluminum-clad windows will likely not qualify for government energy rebates.

If you've never replaced your aluminum windows before, you're in for a big choice: do you stick with aluminum or go Replacement windows are designed to take the place of wood windows. If you have metal windows, there are challenges If fiberglass windows are not on your window shopping radar, they should be. Fiberglass has just about everything HI ended up going with simonton vinyl windows beige inside and espresso on the outside no grids the frame is thinner to open up the view so far they are really nice I recieved alot of negative remarks using aluminum they sweat ect.

Or did you think someone would fall for such a cheap advertising ploy? We live in Chandler and just had a quote for Milgard thru Lowes as well - What did you end up doing? If you went with them how was the install and, I know its too soon, but how do you like the windows. Thanks Gail. Removing latex paint from the aluminum frame on my windows Q. I have done it before it's less caustic than other solvents. Linda 8 years ago. I can totally understand why a condo association would not want each individual homeowner replacing windows.

When I look at a building, I don't want to see different windows on different portions of the building. That goes for individual houses, commercial buildings, condo buildings etc. It isn't just the design of the product, it is also the issues involved in replacing the windows. I wouldn't like to have my upstairs neighbor get replacement windows and then not get them installed properly and get leaks inside the walls, down into my unit. Linda So what is the alternative to defective or windows in disrepair?

Unless the association undertakes a capital project to replace all the windows then it's up to the owner to maintain their property. How could the owner sell the property if they have failing windows or doors? The association has to provide some means for an owner to maintain the property and be energy efficient. If that means they spec out replacement units and designate a supplier so be it. But to say you can't is unacceptable in my view. In the developments I'm familiar with, window replacement is similar to roof replacement.

Jobs are done on a schedule not necessarily all at one time and are a major project paid for from the association's reserves. If the windows are in bad shape and the association is ignoring the problem, a condo owner has a couple options, neither of them very desirable. First is get elected to the condo board. Those folks have the power to force the issue. I could understand owners being permitted to replace windows in a development where each unit is physically distinct and the only contact with the neighboring units is a party wall, like a townhouse unit.

But for a large building with many units, I would expect the association to handle such issues. Related Stories.
